Here is my air filtration unit. It is a shop made unit based on plans from several magazines (American Woodworker #80, Wood #120). Many people have asked for the plans to this unit and while I would like to give them to everyone, I really do not have any. I did draw up and scan some rough drawings for anyone who is interested in building one. You may have to adapt them to your particular blower.
For mine, I was able to pick-up a used blower from a local HVAC shop for free. It is a three speed, 1100 CFM blower and will move alot of air in the shop. I built a plywood box and added three filters to it. The first is a 50 cent furnace filter followed by a pleated furnace filter (~$4.00), both from Lowes. The third filter is a replacement bag filter for the JDS brand unit (~$32.00). With a three speed switch and 2 hour timer the total came in around $50 not counting the plywood I had on hand. It works great! |

My cyclone central dust collection system. This is the cyclone from the Wood Magazine plans. I used the recommended Penn State blower and get plenty of suction at each tool. It was fun to build and I would recommend anyone give it a try if they are considering a central dust collection unit. I recently vented the blower out the window because I was tired of cleaning the filter unit. I have installed a CO detector next to the gas furnace and hot water heater to detect any backdraft from the air lost in the shop. |
